Abstract: 
Purpurin (1,2,4-trihidroxyanthraquinone), a naturally occuring anthraquinone pigment present in the root of Rubia tinctorum (Mull. Arg.) Zahlbr. was isolated from the plant, purified and characterized by HPLC chromatography, UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy.
