Platelet recovery, morphology, ultrastructural propertiesand surface antigen expression (primarily GPIb/CD42b)alterations were examined. The correlation betweenintergroup variations (controlled–rate vs. uncontrolled –rate freezing) of platelet parameters were determined. The platelet recovery was higher (91.0±5.5 vs. 86.0 ± 6.5)in the controlled–rate group. The recovery of discs, andsubsequent intergroup variations for platelets morpholog-ical score (MSP) were significantly (p<0.01) better in con-trolled–rate cryopreservation. Differences between cryop-reserved vs. control group for GPIb/CD42b, CD62p,CD63 and PS were significant (p<0.05), regardless thefreezing procedure used. Contrary, CD62p expressionwas significantly (p<0.05) higher in the controlled–ratesetting. The decrease of the GPIb/CD42b expression cor-related with platelet postthaw in vitro recovery and MSP.en_US
